What is Botox?

Botox is a muscle relaxant primarily used for wrinkle reduction. Botox is most commonly used to treat dynamic wrinkles—those caused by facial muscle movement including the frown, forehead and crows feet but also in the jaw for a slimming effect or for medical reasons such as migraines or excessive sweating.  You may find that aside from the aesthetic benefits the treated area will feel lighter.

How does Botox work?

Botox works by temporarily blocking nerve signals to the muscles it’s injected into. This causes the muscles to relax, which helps to smooth out wrinkles or treat other muscle-related conditions. The effects are temporary lasting from 3-4 months because the body eventually absorbs the Botox, and the muscle regains its function over time.

What can you expect during a Botox treatment at De Gezichtskliniek

Gratis Botox Consultation

The first step is a consultation with your doctor where you can discuss the areas you would like treatmented and see if you are a good candidate.  Your doctor will create a treatment plan with a dose.  If it is your first time usually your doctor will advise a dose on the lower side to avoid complications with overtreatment.  If the result of that dose is too low you can come back within 2 weeks for a top up.

Botox Injections

Botox is injected directly into the targeted muscle areas using a fine needle. The number of injections will vary depending on the size and number of areas being treated. You might feel a small pinch or sting with each injection, but the discomfort is generally brief.

Results

You can return to your normal activities right after the treatment, as there’s no downtime. However, you may experience some redness or slight swelling at the injection sites, which is usually temporary. The results aren’t immediate—Botox starts working within a few days, with full results often visible after 2 weeks. It temporarily relaxes the treated muscles, which softens or eliminates the appearance of wrinkles or fine lines.

Post-Treatment Care: what to avoid

In most cases, you can continue your normal daily activities immediately after the treatment.

After Botox, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Don’t lie down or bend over excessively for about 4 hours after the treatment.

  • Avoid massaging or rubbing the treated area, as this could cause the Botox to spread to unintended muscles.

  • You should also avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, and excessive heat for the first 24-48 hours.

Botox Follow-Up

The end result will be visible after 2 weeks.  We offer a top up at a reduced rate from 2-4 weeks if you feel more is needed for the result you would like. This can range from €10- €60 per zone depending on how much is needed. Typically, Botox results last for about 3-4 months. Over time, the muscle activity will gradually return, and you may notice the wrinkles or lines reappearing.  In the case your result does not last 3 months a higher dose will be recommended in your next treatment.

Botox FAQ

When will I see the results?

You will not see any results immediately after the treatment. After a few days you will start to notice that there is less movement in the treated area. After 1 week after the treatment you will see much more results and after 2 weeks you will see the final result.

How long does Botox last?

How long the botox treatment continues to work varies from person to person. The average period is 3 to 4 months. With repeated treatments in succession, you can expect a prolonged result.

Is Botox painful?

The botox treatment uses a very small needle, which means that the injections are generally not experienced as very painful. If you want to be assured of being completely pain-free during the treatment, we can always use an anesthetic cream.

Will I have swelling or bruising?

It is not common for swelling or bruising to occur with Botox treatment. Often, there are no visible signs that you have been treated immediately after treatment.  In some cases, especially in older people bruising can occur.

Which Botox brand do you use?

Our prices are based on the brand Bocouture®.  This is one of the top 3 Botox brands in Europe.

How much does Botox cost?

We offer some of the lowest botox prices in the Netherlands. Our prices are for standard dosage. Men and people with strong muscles often need a higher dosage, namely prices per unit. The doctor will discuss this with you during your appointment. If you notice that a higher dosage is needed from 2-4 weeks, we offer that for a small fee.

Where is De Gezichtskliniek located?

We offer botox in all of our clinics located in Alkmaar, Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Hilversum, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Zwolle.

What is the best age to start Botox?

The best age to start getting botox is before wrinkles start to set. We do not activley encourage preventative botox but when you notice creaping in in your skin in movement.  This will likely be in your 30s.

Where can Botox be injected?

The most common ares for botox are the eyes and above (frown, forehead and crows feet).  Lower face botox is gaining popularity with it's ability to lift or shape without fillers such as facial slimming botox.

What are the long-term effects of repeated Botox use?

Long-term Botox use can lead to smoother skin, reduced wrinkle formation, and a more youthful appearance. Over time, treated muscles may weaken slightly, leading to longer-lasting results. Some users may develop resistance or require higher doses.

Can men also get Botox treatments?

Yes, men can absolutely get Botox treatments—and many do. Botox helps reduce forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines, offering a refreshed, more youthful look without surgery. Treatments are tailored to maintain natural facial expressions, often with slightly different dosing or technique to suit male facial anatomy.
