Ozempic in the Netherlands: Can I get Ozempic from my huisarts/GP?

There are some instances where medical weight loss injections such as Ozempic, Mounjaro and Wegovy are covered by insurance and can we requested from your huisarts. In cases where patients are obese but do not have Type 2 Diabetes usually it is required to complete a 1 year program to loss weight focused on healthy eating and habits,

• For Type 2 Diabetes: Ozempic is generally covered by health insurance in the Netherlands.

• For weight loss: Ozempic is not typically covered for weight loss unless you have obesity-related health conditions. It may be prescribed off-label by your huisarts for people with a BMI above 30.

• Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is not yet widely available or approved in the Netherlands for diabetes or weight loss but may become an option in the future.

If not the huisarts, where then?

The majority of Medical Weight Loss in the Netherlands is prescribed and managed by private clinics where you are overseen by a doctor. However, it is not available to everyone and there are strict eligibility criteria.

Overall Health: A thorough health assessment will be conducted, including an evaluation of kidney function, cardiovascular health, and potential allergies or contraindications.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Ozempic is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you are planning to become pregnant or are pregnant, your huisarts will likely explore alternative treatments.

Age: patients must be above 18 years old

Type 2 Diabetes: Most private clinics do not treat patients with Type 2 Diabetes as this should be managed with more specialised care

No history of disordered eating
