Ozempic in the Netherlands: Can I get Ozempic through my GP?

There are some cases in which medical weight-loss injections such as Ozempic , Mounjaro, and Wegovy are reimbursed by insurance and can be requested through your general practitioner. In cases where patients have obesity but not Type 2 Diabetes, it is usually mandatory to first follow a one-year weight-loss program, with a focus on healthy nutrition and lifestyle habits.

For Type 2 Diabetes

Ozempic is generally reimbursed by health insurance in the Netherlands.

For weight loss

Ozempic is generally not reimbursed for weight loss, unless there are obesity-related health problems. It can be prescribed off-label by your GP for a BMI above 30.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is currently not widely available or approved in the Netherlands for diabetes or weight loss via your Health Insurance, but could become an option in the future.

If it doesn't go through the GP, where can I buy Ozempic?

The majority of medical weight loss treatments in the Netherlands are prescribed and supervised by private clinics, where you are under the supervision of a doctor. However, this is not available to everyone, and strict admission criteria apply.

BMI +27

Type 2 Diabetes

Most private clinics do not treat patients with Type 2 Diabetes, because this requires specialized care.

General health

A comprehensive health assessment is performed, including a check of kidney function, cardiovascular health, and possible allergies or contraindications.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Ozempic is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, your GP will likely discuss alternative treatments.

Patients must be 18 years of age or older.

No history of eating disorders.

The future of weight loss medication

Governments and health insurers realize that weight-loss injections could potentially reduce total healthcare costs and offer better health outcomes for people who are overweight and obese. However, this medication is currently still expensive. As costs decrease and the medication continues to improve, we expect that weight-loss injections will likely become available to more people.
